NERAM invites schools to loan a kit as part of our new ‘Museum in a Box Outreach Program’.
NERAM, Museum of Printing and Hopscotch Press present this program to creatively engage secondary school students with their local museums without leaving the classroom environment. This program is designed to provide teachers and students with a ready made lesson linked to the NSW curriculum filled with unique museum artefacts and tools, worksheets and art making activities for students. The equipment provided is ideal for groups of 24 or less. When in a larger group students will have to share materials in pairs.

About Museum of Printing at NERAM:
Museum of Printing houses a historically significant collection of printing machinery and equipment which comprise the FT Wimble & Co. Collection. The collection includes printing presses, a Linotype machine, guillotines, book binding equipment, wooden and metal type and a history of printing in Australia from 1850 to the early 1900s. The Museum of Printing is now the home of the Black Gully Printmakers, a community of artists and print enthusiasts. Click here for more information.

Description of Activity:
Part 1: Investigating. Engaging in Museum of Printing education resource and worksheets provided students will gain an understanding of the history of print publishing. Students will be introduced to the history and concepts of vintage print advertising.
Part 2: Art-Making. Students are asked to select from the collection of vintage printing blocks, including those donated by Armidale Folk Museum, and design an A4 page magazine ad. Students will combine the block with stencil type and copy from a typewriter to convey their own message interpreting the block in its historic and cultural context.
They will need to consider design elements like colour, balance, repetition, scale, negative space, and fonts as well as the limitations of physical elements.
Duration of session: 2 hours
Dates: This program is available to loan for a period of up to 2 weeks per school during the school term.
Venue: This is an outreach program able to be utilised in the classroom environment for schools in the Armidale region and surrounds.
Cost: Member Schools free, Non-Member Schools $25 per program
