About The Hinton Collection
The Hinton Collection at the New England Regional Art Museum is the result of one of the greatest acts of artistic philanthropy and benefaction in Australian history. Between 1928 and 1948 a collection of over 1000 artworks by leading Australian artists were donated to the newly constructed Armidale Teachers’ College by the retired shipping agent, Howard Hinton OBE (1867-1948). The Collection provides a snapshot into Australian artistic practice in the early twentieth century, more specifically Australian Art from the 1880s – 1940s. View the collection online.
Still Life
One of the principle genres of Western art, is Still Life. A Still Life is a drawing, painting or sculpture of anything that does not move or is dead. From the ancient Greeks to the Impressionists and beyond, Still Life’s have provided artists with inspiration through the centuries. Still Life includes all kinds of man-made or natural objects. At NERAM a large proportion of the Hinton collection comprises still life, interior and flower arrangements.
Description of Activity:
Guided by an arts educators, students will delve into the Hinton exhibition currently on permanent display at NERAM. Providing a snapshot of colonial Australian art – students will further investigate colonial Australian art, artists camps, The Heidelberg School, the role of women as artists during this time and the emerging modernists style on display.
Inspired by the still life paintings in this collection, students will be guided through a series of sketching exercises in the gallery space looking at line, shape and tone.
Dates: Available Mon-Fri during school terms.
Suitable for early stage 1-5.
