Maria Pia Mosquera is a Colombian-born artist based in Sydney. Rooted in the aesthetics of medieval and Latin-American colonial art, her work wryly re-imagines the contemporary world through the lens of religious iconography, mythology and folklore, vestiges from a time when the power of the supernatural to intervene in our lives was taken to be self-evident.
Making use of oneiric imagery that challenges the macabre with whimsical humour and invites reflection on our everyday lives, the paintings in this exhibition re-imagine depictions of women in ancient stories in order to engage with contemporary society, which is only beginning to reckon with the misogyny that drives persistent violence against women.
