May 7 @ 5:30 pm
Students will get an overview of letterpress printing posters using large-format wood type and the vintage iron flatbed press from the MoP collection. With a focus on typeforms, typefaces, and the elements of design, students will compose a word, short phrase, or name and experiment with layering and inking techniques to achieve a textured, vintage-style design.
Students will consider how to create their poster design using shape, color, space, form, line, value, and texture, as well as type-specific considerations such as readability and hierarchy. They will select the type for their poster from the vintage wood type in the MoP collection, and learn how to set the type so that it will be readable when printed, and decide on background options.
Students will “proof” their type (create a quick print of their selected elements), evaluate the quality of the printing, trial inking techniques, and decide on any changes. They will also utlise analogue composing techniques such as cutting out proofs to manually arrange elements.
Students will create their final prints, following best practice process of locking up their composition, hand-inking, registration, maintaining a clean workspace, and final clean-up.
